The for-profit point isn't really the core issue. IMHO the big issues are the use of non-Free software on servers the use of non-Free software on clients asking people who participate in OSM to enter into an agreement with some entity other than OSMF (or OSMF-US etc.) So OSMF deciding to pay a company to provide hosting services and sysadmin to support Free tools (such that people can use it without signing a contract with the hosting company) would be fine. Even having non-Free server code and Free clients, with no contracts, would be better. (I have no real idea about slack, except that it seems to be a walled-garden type place.)
