I would not use living_street unless there really is a legal notion that matches it. If there's a gate, and you have to have a code to get through, or if there is a no trespassing sign, then I would mark it access=private. It follows from access=yes/permissive that a router can send you there and it is expected to work. It follows from access=destination that a router can send you there if your destination is there and that is expected to work. None of that is true with an unmanned code gate. To find out, take a test drive and see how it goes (not really kidding). If there's no right of access, but people act as if there is, I would use access=permissive. As far as residential vs service (ignoring unclassified/residential), in Massachusetts I tend to do: public way (essentially always named) => residential private way (essentially always named)=> residential shared driveway to 3 houses (essentially never named) => service, driveway The big dividing line is whether the way is laid out as a lot in the parcels map. But this is not entirely reliable as there may be named roads within a condo complex that are not legally separate parcels but you would have no idea of that from being there. The other thing is that driveways are usually either too narrow to be real roads, or very clearly to get you from a main road to a parking lot. So I would say that roads in gated communities that feel like roads, in width, usage, and going by many houses, should get highway=residential, even if not named. You should also walk around and talk to locals and see what they think :-) But most non-mapping locals would think this is an odd question. Are you armchair mapping, or actually there?
