OSM's USBRS WikiProject seeks volunteer mappers to help map new United States Bicycle Routes in Washington state approved by AASHTO.
Please see http://wiki.osm.org/wiki/WikiProject_U.S._Bicycle_Route_System , a reference and status page for the project. USBRs 87, 95 and 97 in Washington state are newly-approved by AASHTO as national routes. These are roughly equivalent to new US or Interstate highways, but for bicycles. Very helpful would be additional experienced OSM volunteers, comfortable editing OSM relations, to improve/complete these by creating/adding additional route members to an existing relation from a soft-copy map and/or text description of the route. If you wish to help build our national bicycle network in OSM, please follow the wiki link above and click on links in the Approved section's rows for USBRs 87, 95 and 97. This will take you to a downloadable file of the state "ballot," now fully approved by AASHTO. (OSM-US has explicit permission to use these ballots to enter geo data into our map). The wiki offers technical/tagging guidance, as well as acts as a progress reporting mechanism. Nonetheless, it's fairly easy as "the skids are already greased" for you: all three relations have been "seeded" with a few members at their north and south termini. What is needed now is to add to the relation the additional members of bicycle infrastructure that make up the remainder of these routes. Please help out by adopting a route! (If you complete an entire route data, please wiki-update your progress). Though this isn't difficult, each route might take a few hours of effort. After you complete a route in OSM, one reward is to see the red line of a new, official USBR blossom in Cycle Map layer. Other rewards happen for on-the-ground participants (cities, counties, state DOTs, the public, stakeholders, bicycle coalition groups...), who see the route in our widely available (Cycle layer) map. This encourages more routes in more states to emerge in a geographically friendly way, tying more of the network together and facilitating harmonious progress and further growth in the USBRS, the US' very own national bicycle network. BTW, AASHTO's Autumn 2017 round has also approved additional routes (already entered into OSM): USBR 1 in Virginia (minor realignment on new infrastructure) USBR 35 in Michigan (ditto) USBR 76 in Virginia (ditto) USBR 50 in West Virginia (a short but important connection: USBR 50 now goes from DC westerly all the way to the Indiana-Illinois line).
