Grant, You'll be shocked at the problems at MetroRail. They recently announced suspension of the Meyl service due to a fight with Transnet Freight Rail. One of the mistakes was that the government removed MetroRail from Transnet, presumably on their way to privatization of the latter. If they fight now while they have the same shareholder, just think how they will fight when one of them is in private hands.
Although many of the good Freight Rail employees have quit over the last 15 years, Freight Rail lessened the impact by centralizing some of the operations. MetroRail on the other hand is much smaller and has to make do with the scraps that fall of the table. Similarly Gautrain "poached" some of the best Freight Rail people. And certain skills are not being replaced. Based on it you can predict a date (2030?) when the last train will stop because the last engineer with a certain mission critical skill has died. (At that point they will pay top dollar to get an American or European firm to do the job).
