Hi all, I've met with David Makwela, the geography HOD at Kwabhekhilanga high school in Alex. I explained the project to him, including the point that the information is free and has to come from free sources, like actual field-work. I gave him five 26-page ring-bound street maps of Alexandra: The front page is the WalkingPaper of the whole of Alex (zoom 14), and the inside pages are WalkingPapers at zoom 16: 5×5 maps covering the same area as the front page. I explained that the current map really isn't very good, because it's short on street names and Points of Interest like churches, shops, schools, etc. I also explained that if the learners could draw this information on the map, I would be able to see to it that this information gets onto the actual map itself, and even involve the learners in this process.
I recommended that he could have the learners form groups, and as a preliminary exercise, draw a grid on the front page showing the borders of the pages, and then identify the pages and number them. He liked this idea. He also immediately saw that this would be a great project for fieldwork, and when I said that the kids could draw in PoIs, he commented that they could for example sketch in buildings. I offered to talk to the kids on a Saturday, which he would very much like, so I'll keep contact with him. I'll also report back to the group.
