Thanks for the screenshot. Yes, I think the issue is the OpenStreetMap Garmin map was not created as a transparent set or the stacking order is wrong. This guy make specialist rendered OpenStreetMap Garmin map for hikers: http://openmtbmap.org/ including contours. (Contours from SRTM) I am no Garmin / mkgmap expert, but I could have a go if OpenMtbmap isn't helpful.
