Glen,

"Why can't I use building=yes AND
shop=shopping_centre/shop=mall/shop=convenience/shop=* ..."

Tags related to the combination of features should be tagged at the relation
level, and not the individual features. There might be exceptions.

"On the relation side, I also think site=mall is too specific..."

>From the OSM wiki: "Tag:shop=mall refers generally to a shopping mall or
>"shopping center" in the North American sense or a "shopping centre" in the
>European sense. Broadly speaking, given a single building with multiple
>commercial retail stores where the entrances to the stores let onto a common
>enclosed area, this may be referred to as a shopping mall. In this case, the
>entrances typically face in-ward or toward one another. This tag may also be
>applied to the arrangement where there are multiple buildings, each with
>multiple commercial retail stores whose entrances are on the outer margins of
>the buildings."

The colloquial use of "shopping centre" and "mall" and "shops" is very
ambiguous, and will differ from person to person. There are malls with multiple
buildings; shopping centres that are covered. I don't have a solution, other
than being consistent. If anyone has another idea... please pitch in.

"surface=* is usually used for the type of surface covering a feature (e.g.
surface=grass ...)"

Point taken. There seems to be two main uses of GLA (when talking about retail
floor space): Gross Lettable Area and Gross Leasable Area. A mall's
surface_area may include non-lettable area, whereas the values we are capturing
(with a specific use in mind) is the lettable are. So, what are we going to do?
Hhmm... let's go with lettable_surface_area

Regards
Johan
