Right, well I figured out the X-Western issue, it's a language tag. Jaws, in it's infinite wizdom, was, ya know, just trying to do it's job, but there is no dialogue/voice to switch to for "X-Western", so it wouldn't switch to it. I've made that go away; I don't need language detection anyway. Now I'm just having issues with quoting text and trying to get the columns in the order I like. Other basic things are working fine, mail filters are friendly, all that sort of thing.

By the way, I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.16, latest as far as I know.

X-Western
Does anyone have a clue what this is all about, and what can be done about it?

Since we don't know specifically what you're using, it's hard to say. The latest update to Jaws might have a fix, or it more than likely won't. Also be sure you're using Thunderbird 2; TB3 has lots of problems in Windows right now. Or you could try the Window-Eyes 7 beta which works really well in Thunderbird or NVDA.
