Turns out I was bitten by this bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=802811
Removing libqt5x11extras5 (5.5.1-2) and replacing it with (5.4.2-2+b1) retrieved from: snapshot.debian.org/package/qtx11extras-opensource-src/5.4.2-2/#libqt5x11extras5_5.4.2-2:2b:b1 ... fixed the issue with VLC.
