Enron wiped out pensions and Bernie Madoff got 150 years in the slammer for his Ponzi scheme, pretty much all within the last decade. I watched a video of Noam Chomsky discussing Trump's candidacy. Interestingly he pointed out that what has happened in the US is that the current system has placed huge quantities of money in the hands of a small fraction of the 1%.
