Another place to learn some computer building skills is FreeGeek Toronto: http://freegeektoronto.org/ They receive donated computers, refurbish (rebuild) them, and "re-sell them at an accessible price to help low income communities get connected." After you've helped build four or five systems you get to keep the next self-built system for yourself (at least, that's how it once was).
