Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. I installed getmail, and, with a very simple configuration -- the only kind I can write yet -- it fetches mail from O365 shared mailboxes just fine. So I suppose I'll migrate to getmail from fetchmail, which seems to run more efficiently anyway.
