I used SLIP with my first ISP (anyone remember io.org), but when I moved to IBM's Advantis started using PPP. One issue with SLIP was it required static addresses, IIRC. This meant an ISP couldn't share IP addresses among multiple users, even though people generally weren't connected all the time, the way we are these days.
