Thanks to the write-up from Stuart, I managed to print to the HP 1102w printer by disconnecting USB and using wireless IPP protocol. Why this is *easier* with wireless than it is with a direct connection I couldn't say, but at least I have a way to print from linux now. (Doing admin work I often am in the cycle of getting forms to sign via email --> print the form --> sign it --> scan it back in --> send back via email.)
