If you have access to this formal process is it not possible to substitute
the : which
is causing all the unexpected behaviour with another character ?

But is this not the exact reason why we continue to advocate for and use
open source ? If this
was a Windows executable with closed source there is very little one can
do. But in this
case if evince ( or any other tool..) does not behave as expected or does
not do what we
want it to ? Or does not have the functionality we require then what is
preventing us from
downloading the evince source code and making the necessary changes we want
?
