Of course OS installs in general can be a pain.  Installing windows
isn't something most people would enjoy doing either.  But most people
start out with a working windows install and then try to add linux to
that setup so certainly that makes the linux step much harder (anything
is harder than doing nothing after all).

Driver support for hardware has certainly always been a problem (and
can certainly be an issue on some machines with windows too).
