3rd party firmware? A number of years ago I got a Linksys E2500 router whose original firmware I blew away in favour of an open source alternative (currently I am running FreshTomato (which is getting regular updates)). Are there currently available new routers where you can install a 3rd party open source OS, such as FreshTomato or some equivalent?
