Among the other ideas in this thread, you might also check out
sphinxsearch (http://www.sphinxsearch.com). I started (but have not
finished...yet) a series on using and implementing it on my blog
(http://blog.sensual.jp).
It has some nice perks, one of which being the ability to index straight
out of MySQL (or postgresql), or from an XML format.
