If you avoid functions that are not cross platform, it's fairly easy to take SQL database creation scripts in one platform and import them in another. The benefit of XML or YAML would be that you can include those platform specific features, and if your DB doesn't support it, it just ignores it and leaves it to the application to implement if needed.
