I thought the one-line view was a requirement before 9.0, but I could be wrong. There are a lot of moving parts here, including the WLM script and the set files that used to play a more important role. Even Windows Live Mail has had some updates over the past year or so. Therefore, I could certainly be remembering incorrectly now, but I do know that the one-line view seems to work fine for me now.
