Hi Larry:
I don't know about sorting but Windows 8.1 can be set up so it works pretty
well.
I have mine setup to show the Desktop at startup, got rid of using the Start
Menu and put things I use often on either the Desktop or in the TaskBar for
quick usage.
That said, I still have to use the ribbon thingy from time to time and
really don't like having to type things into the start menu or window or
whatever it is called to find things that are not intuitive and not on my
Desktop or StartMenu or slog through the AllPrograms list.
I found much, much depends on how you setup Windows 8.1 as to how many
migraines you get along the way.
Don't forget, if better, I think you will get a free Windows 10 upgrade when
it comes out ready for prime time and that may be a lifestyle choice you
could jump on as well.
I would just tell you how to setup Windows 8.1 but actually I forget - just
did it on the fly as I found things that worked for me.
But, setting up the Desktop at logon time is one, not using the apps in the
StartMenu is another, and turning off all the auto-run apps that wer not
germain to my system was still another.
Also I turned off all the eye candy like sliding things into view, fadding
in and out of visibility and others then clicked some checkbox to include
all the basic functional features that were on the Windows XP box on my
current Desktop like MyComputer, called something else now, ControlPanel and
the other usual suspects like Recycle Bin etc...
Now I can just tab through the Desktop, start menu, never use it except for
searches, the Task Bar, the Notification bar and I think a button that takes
me to the desktop which I never use since the next tab takes me, cycles
back to the desktop anyway.
When I am in a program I sometimes have to use the bloody ribbons but
usually just hitting alt-f10 will bring up the ContextMenu where most things
are available - note that other things are only available on the ribbon.
To use the ribbon I hit alt key then tab around the ribbon guessing at what
to do next but usually I only use it on rare occasions gratefully.
But, using the alt-f10 key or tabbing around the ribbon I can find most
things of common usage, that and using the ControlPanel icon on my desktop.
When all that fails I hit enter on that StartMenu thingy and type something
and then arrow through a list of options and can often find outlying
features that way.
I would guess your sort is a feature, if not of windows directly, in the
options for the FileManager that appears in my TaskBar and I usually avoid
using so cant help with your question directly but perhaps something I threw
out will help or trigger someones memory as how to sort files in a folder.
It depends on what program is controlling that sorting, ie file manager,
Outlook or other program me thinks and should be readily available -
someplace in the wonderful world of windows nonsense.

Subject: sorting files in folders in Windows 8.1

Hello Listers,

Well I finally upgraded to a brand new and very fast computer, and
Windows 8.1. While waiting to finally afford the new W 8.1 machine, I
used my wife's laptop which ran Windows 7, a much more intuitive OS
IMHO. Everything that was so simple with 7 is so much harder with 8.
Anyway, this is my question.

I am simply wanting to change the sorting order of my files in one of my
documents folders, namely bookshare, and cannot for the life of me
figure out how to change the view from what ever it is at present to
last modified. I understand that it can be done within the ribbon, but I
haven't come anywhere near to mastering that one.

This OS is making me feel something like a neofite, though I've been
using a PC for nearly 25 years.

OK, sorry about the venting, but would really like some help with this one.

BTW, does anybody have some ideas as to an intro book I could use to
move the learning process along? Hopefully something that doesn't rely
on the mouse to much.

I have in deed made some progress, but I'll admit, I'm about to lose
patients <smile>.

Thanks much,

Larry
