No, Windows Vista or later will work fine. FYI, Windows Defender is just
actually one part of what Microsoft calls "Microsoft Security Essentials"
(MSE) (for anyone searching for it).

I will agree it works well, and is accessible. My wife and I each used it
on our pcs. Her was infected in the past few weeks, and MSE could not see
the trojans or remove them. I purchased "trojan Killer" (done in a hurry on
a recommendation from someone), and while that found and removed the
trojans, it was only accessible by using the mouse cursor (like so many of
the better ones). I used it in conjunction with MSE, which you can do if
you do not turn on their "real time" portion, but just scan with it.

Trojan Killer was $40 a year; if you're going to buy something, I suspect
research will show there is likely something better.

For what this is worth, free isn't always as good.

I believe Windows Defender requires Windows 8 or later--is that correct?
