That's kind a the position I'm at right now with one of my studio audio
production machines. We got one of them still on xp, and another one on
Windows 7. It really just depends on your hardware. And no, the one on xp
isn't connected to the internet. It's connected to our LAN, yes, but not to
the outside world.
Chris.

I mostly agree with what Jim said about upgrading, but there are some
important reasons for some to continue with XP. An example is folks who
have high-end audio setups with software and hardware that works, cost a
bunch, and won't work under newer operating systems.
For a very low cost, one can install Vipre which is accessible and runs on
XP.

Yes at the risk of making people who love xp mad at me and I am sorry in
advance. If you are running xp it is time past time to get rid of xp and
update to windows 8.1. xp is no longer being supported. It is not being
updated. At some point soon window-eyes will probably not work with it.
Windows 8.1 can be maid to look like xp for the most part using clasec
shell and old new explorer. Window-eyes works wonderful with clasec shell
and old new explorer will give you the menu system back in explorer and
will
work wonderful with window-eyes. You will also have access to windows 8
apps
such as facebook window-eyes works like a dream with this app for example
this means you will not need to get apps like socialize.
You will have access to windows defender as well. A much better built in
speech synthesizer the ability to refresh your system with speech if need
be. The list of advantages goes on but I think we get the idea.
As I said I don't want to start a debate, but xp is old and really should
be updated to windows 8.1 if possible.
Most systems running xp will also run windows 8.1. unless it is a really
old
box. This means if you can update you really should.

Hi
Just a note on mse - I still use a xp machine, and although the end of
support notice is there, mse still works on my xp machine. The
definitions
are being updated, and all still works as expected. The only thing you
will
see is that the pc status will show "at risk", but I ignore that, and it
is
still doing fine.

Actually this is not true. Many virus protection packages will
allow you to run them along side one another. Defender will not and
if you do run programs like this along side one another you are
asking for trouble.

The only way you could use two antivirus programs is to run them
manually and separately. Pam.

Hi,
Generally, it is not recommended to have two real time antivirus
scanners running as this could create conflicts as well as slowing
down the computer.

OK, Just one more question if I may. Should one run Defender along
with other virus checkers, or should it be run exclusively? I just
got a new computer, and we just installed the free version of Avira,
so really need to have an answer to this question.
Please feel free to reply off list at the above address.
Any help with this issue will be greatly appreciated,
Larry

I understand that MS has a free multi-antivirus program called

I am presently subscribed to Vipre internet protection. I have
certainly not been in fected since using it but it is not free and I
don't find it all that accessible.
I won't renew my subscription if Microsoft has a free
alternative.What do people think?
