Brenda, Make sure you are using the latest Thunderbird. Earlier versions IE 24 may do exactly what you are saying with 9.1.
The current version of Thunderbird is 31.6.0. So again I would suggest calling GW. They've been dealing with these things for so long they may know exactly what's going on as soon as they hear your description of the problem. For me 9.1 was a big improvement. So something may have gotten messed up that requires their emergency removal utility. If nothing else they should know best what to check and have you do to try to track down the problem.
