Hi,
It sounds like your shift key was stuck down.
If you launch window-eyes and the left shift key is held down at launch, the 
backup synthesizer is selected.

Also apps get turned off.

Found the problem. Window-Eyes switched sysnthesizers on it's own
without my even opening the control panel and set it to Eloquence and
what a horrible voice you can't hear it. This should not happen EVER
