While I agree that GW support is some of the best people I've worked with,
sometimes, for whatever reason, it is not feezable to outright perchase
something that costs a lot. The hole reason for the free version (The
Window-eyes offer for microsoft office, was so that people with low-incomes,
(minimal resources), would have access to a quality screen reader. Now, NVDA
does very well, but again, it's the fact that your getting a commercial
screen reader for next to nothing. Now, to offer support options, $99.00
per year, gives you either 12 months of support, or 12 support insidents. Or
you can pay $25.00 per insident. I still think, even though I have not
needed technical support yet, that AI-squared does a much better job in
communicating with its customer base, and keeps them informed of changes,
and special events, and does an excellent job with training and resources.
Keep it up AI.

Subject: why you should own Window-Eyes; was RE: GW TOOLKIT ERROR
I know I've seen your name for a long time Olusegun, and I didn't mean to
imply anything by adding that little bit about no support to my message; it
was really aimed more at the public (since I thought you had owned this for
a long time, but you can never be sure).
I thought it was worth letting the public know that there's a real benefit
to owning the product, and not just to using the free version (especially so
when, as you point out, you need it for your livelyhood).
It's not just the product that we all count on, and when we compare one
product against another, we need to remember that we should compare the
support, and whether we're getting a locked or unlocked version of the
product. I've gotten so much more from the support of the GW Micro (now AI
Squared) staff over the years than I actually have from the product, it has
completely changed my view as to what your money is really going to buy, and
what's really important to you.
I've come to believe that all of the leading screen readers are roughly the
same; oh one will leap frog ahead in front of the others for a while, but
the staff and how they feel about their customers, that's where they
actually differ from one another; and that's where your money is really
going, to buy you the best support that you can buy. So, if you can afford
to buy a copy of Window-Eyes, and you haven't (but are instead making use of
the free version), you aren't doing yourself any favors. You may have a
crisis some day, and you may need some really cool headed and kind support;
so reconsider the use of that free product, and ask yourself if you could
deal with things if you suddenly could not use your computer due to lack of
support. Would you be just as happy if you switched to another free screen
reader. Would you really want your concerns and problems to make a
difference as to what was added to or fixed in the next release. Then
consider, buying what it is that you really depend upon.
Thanks Olusegun for the loan of a soapbox, I'll climb back down now.
Chip

Chip, I've been a card-carrying church member of GW Micro, now AI Squared,
from the very first day I laid my hands on a computer to learn how to use
it. I still have, even if only for purposes of recorded antiquity,
Vocal-Eyes in my museum <smile>! I still have, though hardly ever put to
work, Windows 3.11 and Window-Eyes 3xx running in that box.
I can't shake a stick at the free stuff; I need my screen reader for work,
not just pleasure.
Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado
