Hi Chris,
I sent the following information tutorial on ripping with WMP to a
beginner friend of mine. Maybe you will find it useful. I also sent it
to David.
Below is a small tutorial that I wrote for a friend of mine about a year
or so ago. I hope you will find it useful. The person I wrote it for
was very new to computers, or at least she thought she was. -- Carol
Setting Up WMP for ripping CDs
First, open Windows Media Player. If you have an icon, use that. If
not, press the windows key and type wmplayer in the search box and press
enter.
Press control-1 The purpose of doing this is so you can hear options as
you tab through the boxes.
Shift-tab probably five times, depending on your options on the screen.
Stop when you reach "organize". Press the up arrow twice. The first
time will say context and the second will say options. Press enter on
options.
Your cursor will most likely land on the first item in the library tab.
Shift-tab once to get to the tab choices (it will most likely say
library) and left-arrow, probably four times, until you get to rip Music.
Once in the Rip tab, you can set up your options. The first time you
tab, you will land on a change button. Press your left-arrow to move to
the name of the file location. If this is acceptable, go to the next
step. If you wish to change your file location, either type in the
complete path for the music folder of your choice or press enter on the
button and tab through the options there and locate your desired folder
or create a new folder and tab to the OK button and press enter.
The next tab is where you choose how you want your track titles to
appear. Press enter on the button. This opens a list of things like
artist, track title, track number, etc. Check the options you want by
pressing the spacebar. Tab to the next list and choose the desired
separator, space, dash, underline, etc., and tab to the next choice,
which is the move up or down choice group, for placing your items in the
desired order, for example, number title. After you have your list in
the order you wish it, tab to the OK button and press enter.
Your next tab brings you to the music format. If you want MP3, for
example, press M and MP3 will be highlighted. We will configure that
choice shortly. The next tab is a link with information about copyright
protection. You may click on that tab or skip it.
The next tab takes you to a checkbox to indicate whether you want CDs to
rip automatically when you put them into the drive. (I use Winamp for
playing my music, so if I put a CD into the drive, it is most likely
that I want it ripped, so I have my box checked. If you do not want
files ripped automatically, leave this box unchecked.
The next tab is simply a checkbox allowing the CD to be ejected once it
has finished ripping. Again, I have mine checked. This is my personal
preference.
OK, now comes the tricky box. This is the option for choosing your bit
rate for MP3 files. If you did not select MP3, you will not see this
box. Actually, WE calls it a trackbar. There are four options as you
arrow up or down. Pay no attention to the fact that all options say
"smallest". Listen for the number, instead. The four choices are:
3 (top choice) rips at 320 bit
2 rips at 256 bit
1 rips at 192 bit and
0, the bottom choice, rips at 128 bit.
After making your choice, simply tab to the OK button and, if you do not
wish to change any of the other settings, press enter on the button and
you are ready for ripping your CDs to your computer.
If you wish to look through other settings groups, tab until you get
back to the Rip Music tab and arrow through the other categories.
Since I have not done more than take a cursory glance at the other
settings, I will not address those here.
Have fun ripping all your music.

I totally agree. I love ITunes, bigtime, but honestly, I really don't
want to put the batch of CD's which I need to rip into my library.
So, yeah, if someone can guide both of us step by step, I am with
David entirely. I'd love to know. I did it once, and as tech savvy as
I am, I'm quite confident that I probably could figure it out on my
own again, but if you all could give some pointers, it would help.

Subject: Ripping music CD's with windows Media Player
Hi all, I have repped many CD's with Windows Media Player but it must
be a year since I did the last one and I have forgotten what to do.
Can someone give me a step by step reminder please?
Dave Mawson.
