Hi Terry,
Assuming you are trying to read an accessible PDF document (and not a scanned 
image PDF), you might want to try using the "Infer reading order from document" 
reading order option instead.

I've been trying to read a file with acrobat reader using the "left to 
right" option and come up with a blank screen.  Has something changed? 
Using the regular options simply gives garbage and using the option I 
mentioned used to work consistently with these documents.
