John,
Reading information on the screen using the Window-Eyes mouse hot keys requires
the availability of an accurate off screen model. The off screen model can be
thought of a database that Window-Eyes uses to keep track of all of the content
displayed on the screen. The off screen model is a very old screen reading
technique. While it can provide some very useful benefits, it also has many
limitations especially in newer operating systems. Window-Eyes has to use many
different techniques to populate its off screen model depending on how the
particular application or operating system displays information on the screen.
As you know, we implemented mouse hot key support in previous versions of
Firefox and Thunderbird. But, Mozilla recently made a significant change to
these applications and started using a completely different display technology
under the hood. When this change tool place, the Window-Eyes mouse hot key
implementation we had been using stopped working. It might be p
ossible to implement new support for Mouse hot keys in these programs but this
would not be a trivial task and most likely would take a great deal of time and
effort. I hope this explanation helps you better understand the challenges
screen reader developers face and clarifies that these types of complex
problems are not as easy to fix as some people might think.
Regards,
Marc

Subject: numpad mouse keys still not working in Firefox

I was disappointed that the numpad mouse keys still do not work in Firefox in
Windoweyes 9.2. WindowEyes staff, what's the reason this issue wasn't able to
be fixed?

Thanks.
