I have a brother all in one laser as well, got it in 2012. Once you get the software installed, I'm wondering if yours has the speech feedback. It is one of the alert options and is buried. It'll say things such as the name of the printer and if it is sleeping, out of paper, no toner ready etc.
It uses the computers tts to generate the speech and is quite handy. You can't change any settings on the machine itself without sighted help, the computer just speaks status messages. It is not color, of course, but provides all the functionality needed otherwise. I got it for $129.00 thru Amazon. I did need some sighted assistance with the software installation but it works quite well.
