Gil, I'm not sure if you can fully stop it, but you can reduce the list size to one. In Word 2010, the setting is in the Options dialog found on the File Menu. Then arrow down to the Advanced tab and tab through the options till you hear "Show this number of recent documents" and change the number in the corresponding box. The setting is quite far down on the list.
