Lou,
It is not garbage at all. It is the music sheet. Try to play it on your
guitar, and let the computer read it out loud to you alongside, and you
now can release the new album. It sure will hit the market like an
elephant... Ha, ha, ha. Just kidding.
As a matter of fact, I have seen the exact same results you describe.
Have not seen any difference between Active window, and focused Window,
when in Adobe. Even, I have some documents here, in PDF, which are a mix
of text and images. Some of the images have text as part of them, which
will not show up when just launched into Adobe. So I ran the OCR on the
document, when open in Adobe, and it reports back to me "no text found".
strange, since it at least should have recognized the text that is
already displayed in Adobe.
Back to your issue. I sent Aaron a couple of PDF files, displaying the
results you describe. If you are able, he might want to see your
document as well, so perhaps send him a direct mail, with the file
attached. He may then be able to elaborate a bit more on the app's
behavior. To me, it seems the OCR does lack some kind of setting, for
handling certain PDF files. And the ones it does handle, I mainly
already can read somehow either with Adobe, or QRead. Sure the app will
be very useful, first we get to know what it can and cannot. besides,
seem to remember aaron already indicated a new version may be on the
workboard, so maybe all the hazzle will be fixed by then.
Just wanted to let you know, that you are not the only one experiencing
this screen, when trying to OCR something. As for the other questions
you have, I basically follow you. A renaming of some of the controls
might be considered. As a developer myself, I can assure you it
sometimes is a job to find good labels for your controls. What makes
total sense for an advanced user, may seem nonsense for a more
moderately knowledged person. And even when sharing code and screens
with other developers, it is not always clear to the others what you had
in mind, when building the features of the software, and its interface.
Kind of reminds me the old days, when we had to teach newbies how to use
a computer, and we had all those computerized terms, like menu, chipset
and mouse. Even had to deal with some customer talking about a
designer-program, named CAT. People sometimes were sitting in the
classroom, wondering if we were running a bad restaurant, a wildlife
zoo, or simply just joking. Oh well, enough of old memories. I am just
trying to say, that it is important to have user-feedback on both the
operation, and the interface of a piece of software. The main issue for
a developer, is to have his users understand the interface. They then
will be much more encouraged to try out the many features on their own,
and may be better equipped to troubleshooting when things don't work as
expected.

I have a pdf called Tension_Chart.pdf, which is basically a document that
tells the amount of stress each of, I think, the D-Addario strings puts on a
guitar at standard tuning. First, I tried opening the pdf in Adobe Acrobat
DC and pressing Control-Alt-V, then selecting focused window and OCR.
Virtual View processed something, and, all I got for my trouble was the
title bar and menu bar. So I closed VV and re-opened it, this time selecting
active window. Again, VV displayed only the title bar and menu bar. Finally,
I closed Adobe and pressed Alt-Print Screen, then selected the
Tension_Chart.pdf. Here is what I ended up with.

I had read in another email that TIF must be enabled in Windows programs and
features as well. So I did that. If that's true, shouldn't that be mentioned
somewhere in the VV installation notes? BTW. I opened the WE control panel
and browsed the File> Factory Settings dialog to see if there was any
additional information about Virtual View. Virtual View is not even listed
there.
I'm using Win 7 64-bit and WE 9.1.
I agree with the sentiment of the other list member who asserted that the
information for Virtual View is just too techie. For example, the require
UAC check box. I guess that means require User Account Control, but why is
that important to have as an option? Those 4 method radio buttons. For one
thing, what is method? I remember that script writers have three characters
of objects to consider: properties, methods, and something else I can't
recall. In the case of these radio buttons, does method mean mode? If so,
can that group of radio buttons be re-labeled to mode?
As for the radio buttons themselves. Option 1: clips. What is that and how
is it used? UIA. I'm assuming User Interface something. What does that stand
for and how is it used? The bottom most radio buttn: Version. What is that
and how is it used?
I don't mind a bit of trial and error, but I become discouraged when two of
my trials produce the exact same results.
On a related note. Why, after several versions of Window-Eyes and Adobe, is
a WE user still unable to access the text of a pdf with the mouse?
