Bob, I have made that mistake myself. You are likely accidentally hitting Alt S, F, which takes you to the References ribbon and enters a footnote. Word inserts a superscript footnote reference number at the point where you mistakenly hit that keystroke. If you hear it right away, press control z to undo. If you catch it later, here's my best hint at getting rid of it. Arrow up and down through the lines of your document. I'm only hearing Word say "1 reference" on the lines where one of these superscript jreferences exists. What I can't seem to do is get WE to read it as I arrow left and right over the number, which I have enough vision to see. Maybe if you turned on some formatting indication setting you might hear it, but I think the reason Word doesn't recognize it as a character is that Word is automatically keeping track of the numbers as you edit a document, in which case it would not make sense for you to be abel to manually edit the number in the text body. Anyway, if you can arrow along and either hear where Window Eyes seems to have two spaces between words, you might be able to find it. Or, frankly, you might need to just delete that line of text and retype it. I cannot find a way to find that number and just select it, which is what a sighted person could easily do. Hope this at least helps a bit.
