I have had that happen with WE 9.x and Windows10 as well. There is or are some windows or something that grab focus but windoweyes doesn't recognize them and then you get nothing. Sometimes if you tab around or start narrator you can get out of it. This particular situation hasent happened lately since I have been playing with WE and Windows Settings over the past year or so to try and stop it. I still get ded spots like when some program, Internet Explorer is the poster boy, either has something like an add or video or something loading WE will lock up until the loading is done which can take many seconds and there is no keyboard input nor any output during this period. Sometimes WE wont come back at all but if you can get narrator fired up, sometimes takes many seconds to start when this happens, you might be able to hear what is going on when narrator starts. I have had these lockups in other programs, not nearly as frequently but they happen from time to time. If you can get narrator working you might find some things are going on like the program is not responding, we wont tell you this, or that something is being focused by windoweyes like a message "send us feedback" or "clear button" which you wont be able to get at with either narrator nor windoweyes as far as I can tell. But once narrator fires up windoweyes usually comes back speaking if you tab around and up and down arrow enough. I have not played with other screen readers enough to say for sure they don't get these problems but I have not had them happen so never fired up narrator while using them to know for sure. They just don't seem to get locked up or, at least, not nearly as often. So first thing to do during a lockup is to try and fire up narrator if you have any keyboard input left, hit the narrator start keys and wait for a minut just in case some looping is going on or something is crushing the processor or a thread is locked up temporarily and if it does eventually start listen to the first words read then try navigating around to see if windoweyes comes back or if narrator finds anything. Of course you could try another screen reader while we is running when this happens but I hav not tried this or at least don't remember trying it and any results. Good luck and post up what you find to help narrow any problems. I hav not been able to even narrow these problems to anything except the reading of the words "send us feedback" or "clear button" by windoweyes after hitting the start narrator keys and just before or after the message "Starting Narrator" is spoken by the narrator voice.
