I also installed the latest version of VLC, but it was as an upgrade to the
earlier version, and it gave me the option to leave all previous settings in
place, so it doesn't act goofy.

w e keeps speaking this counter  while a dvd is playing and i haven't found

vlc setting to turn this off.
