Unable to Read Thunderbird Emails

Hi, Folks.  When I try to read an email in Thunderbird by pressing the 
Enter key on the desired email, I can't read it. When I cursor up or 
down, I get the Windows 10 default sound.  How do I fixt this?  Thanks
