What I am going to say, would apply to any Screen Reader you might
consider.

First is to know how you intend to use your computer. Are you going to
do a lot of Writing, a lot of Number Crunching with a Spread Sheet, or
are you going to use your system as a Mini Digital Studio, where you are
using Sonar, or Reaper, to record Music, etc.

Once you know what you hope to do with your computer, know what software
you intend to use to accomplish what ever it is you are hoping to
accomplish.

Now that you know what you hope to do, and which software packages you
are going to use, start asking the Customer Service departments of each
of the Screen Readers questions that would let you know how well, or not
so well, that Companies Screen Reader is able to read the programs you
intend to use.

You might have to ask more than just Customer Service, and coming to a
list such as this one is a good way to ask directly, people who may be
using the same software, or have attempted to use the same software with
good or bad results.

Just because your Blind friends are using NVDA, doesn't mean that NVDA
is going to work best for you and what you hope to do.

Although, if your friends are all using a particular Screen Reader, it
might be a good idea to go with the same Screen Reader, since those same
Friends can assist you in getting up and running. That is if you do
not have any particular special reason for getting a computer, other
than doing Email, and visiting the Internet.

Nothing like getting your computer, your Screen Reader, and there you
are, by yourself, at home, trying to figure out how to use this new
machine, and the new Screen Reader. When you can call up a friend,
for help, it makes the learning less painful.

But, be sure to know what you intend the Computer, and what software you
intend to use. Then purchase the Screen Reader that has the best record
reading the software you plan to use.

Nothing more frustrating than shelling out a lot of Cash, only to
find you can not do what you were hoping to do.

Hope these guidelines at least give you something to consider.
