If you are all that concerned about loosing speech, thereby loosing the chance of upgrading, why not install NVDA. You could then run NVDA for the short moment it would take to download and get installed the WinEyes upgrade. One of the cases when a backup screen reader does come in handy.
Sure, in the message given by VFO, the upgrade is mentioned to have impact on WE9.5 and up. Yet, noone ever mentioned if the upgrade would make any difference to versions prior to 9.5. My guess is, noone will be able to answer your question, until they find out on or just around January 26. Still, the upgrade is free of charge, so do you have issues that cause you not to upgrade?
