I have the same problem as Don and was told by the Microsoft Disability Desk that those using office 2013 and below, including 2007 which I use also, it simply will not flag the proper read and unread heading. I use Outlook 2007 with Win 10, the latest version. You either upgrade to Office 2016 or learn to get along without the read and unread.
