Yes. That's how you can do it. Space on the first item you want to select. Then hit the control key and the up/down arrow keys until you get the the next item you want. When you're on that item, hit the space key while holding down the control key. Do this for everything you want to choose. You should then be able to use the control-shift-M hotkey to see the items you have selected.
