Hi Ian: One option is to use NVDA, from NVAccess. I am sure that you may be aware of it. I have been using it for several years as a backup for Window-eyes, in cases hwhere Window-eyes doesn't work. It is free of charge but you can make a donation It is also open source software so if you can program in Python, you can participate in the development of the product, either by proposing changes in the main program or writing Addons, which the user can choose to install or not.
Another choice is a package from Serotech called System Access from Sertech. I don't know anything about that accept that you pay a small amount per year, like a subscription. The other option is to continue to use your copy of Window-eyes with the understanding that there will not be any further development on the product, but.
