Hi, one trick which has worked for me is to transfer the entire Thunderbird setup from old to new. However, if all you are interested in is the address book, I will answer that as well. Please note that I'm assuming you know how to open folders, copy things to the clipboard, paste things from the clipboard, and generally not panic. So that being said, my disclaimer is that if your setup breaks, or if your dog comes down with the chicken pocks from following my steps, it's not my fault. So, proceed at your own risk.

First, if you want to transfer everything.. This includes your mail setup, settings, address book, messages, ETC, do the following

1. On old computer press your Windows key to open the start menu.

2. type %appdata% then press enter. Please note that the variable appdata starts and ends with percent symbols, shift-5, so check that out carefully.

3. This will open a folder which contains much of your application data information. Arrow to the Thunderbird folder and press Control-C to copy it to the clipboard.

4. Open a folder of an external drive, USB stick, or other removable media and press Control-V to paste the folder there. Please note that the Thunderbird folder can be very large, several Gb in some cases, so you might want to make sure you have enough room first before doing all of this.

5. Remove the removable media and stick it into your new computer.

6. Open the drive for the removable media from the new computer and find the Thunderbird folder. Press Control-C to copy it to the clipboard.

7. From new computer, repeat steps 1 and 2 so it opens the Application Data folder.

8. Press Control-V to paste the Thunderbird folder from your removable media.

9. Start Thunderbird and cross fingers.

Please note that if you have already setup things in the new computer with Thunderbird, these steps will mess that up. So you only want to do this if you have never used Thunderbird on the new machine. Now, if you only want to transfer your address book, follow these steps.

1. From old computer, repeat steps 1 and 2 from the directions above. this will open your Application Data folder.

2. Arrow to the Thunderbird folder and open it.

3. Look for a Profiles folder and open it.

4. Look for a folder with random characters in the name and which might have the word default and open it. For example, a folder called uhrswkyq.default.

5. Your address book or books will be here. They are called abook.mab or abook-2.mab, ETC. Copy them with Control-C.

6. Open your removable folder from a USB stick or other media and paste the file or files with Control-V.

7. Insert the media in your new computer and open the folder and copy the address book files with Control-C.

8. Still on your new computer, repeat steps 1 through 4 from this set, basically making your way into your Thunderbird profiles folder inside the random named one.

9. Press Control-V to paste the file or files.

Again, if you have already setup Thunderbird, you might already have an address book. If you are ok with overwriting these, then it's safe to paste.

Start Thunderbird and press Control-Shift-B and enjoy your newly transferred address book.

Hi, Folks. I just bought a new laptop and was wondering if there might be a way to transfer the address book in Thunderbird from an older PC to the new one? Thanks in advance for any help you might have regarding this issue.--Matthew Chao.
