Jeff, Sorry about the rather delayed response.
As for the layout, I am using the default. The only setting I am
interested in making on a global level is the speak characters setting,
and this setting will not stick, no matter how I go about saving it.
I know that I succeeded, all be it with a little help back when I
started using this PC, but after the hard drive crash, it has been, so
far at least, absolutely impossible to save this setting.
I have saved all three ways, namely, ctrl+s, by tabbing to the option in
the settings dialog box, and using the save option in the file menu, all
to no avail.
Now here goes my paranoia, hopefully there isn't possibly some sabotage
by the powers that be in order to make the Office version just that much
tougher to use over time. In other words, an attempt at acceleration of
the inevitable <smile>. OK, I think I'm kidding, but anything is
possible online these days.
But anyway, if you or anybody else can help with this little yet big
annoyance, it would really be very much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Larry

I may have missed the beginning of this discussion, but I will give
you some suggestions for saving settings in Window-eyes:
First of all, Make sure that in the keyboard settings that you have
selected the layout that you want. I always use the Window-eyes
default layout.
After selecting this, tab to apply layout and press it, and then tab
to save settings and press enter.
Second, there appear to be at least three set files which are used
when there is not a specific set file for a particular program.
They are
explorer.set,
wineyes.set,
and default.set.
Now when you are making global settings changes, as long as global is
showing in the setting that you are tabbing through, when you tab to
save settings and press enter, it should save those settings
globally, but sometimes, I have had to make the change again for the
other setfiles listed above.
If you have tried all of this, and still need help, give me a specific
example of what the problem is?
What set file is loaded when saving settings?
Is Window-eyes default the layout you have chosen?
Which specific settings don't stick?

Subject: Getting keyboard settings to stick once and for all
I sure hope that someone can refresh my memory on this one.
Let me just say at the outset that all of the usual suspects for saving
settings have been tried, at least to my knowledge. I even tried saving
settings to set files as I went along, but to know avail.
I believe that someone gave me a really great tip for making sure these
ssetting stuck once and for all, but it has been so long ago, and any
hope I might have for retrieving them from old email vanished with my
hard drive crash.
Needless to say, this is really driving me nuts, just one more headache
I don't need while trying to rebuild my computer environment.
If anybody could please, please help, it would be most gratefully
appreciated. Please don't suggest switching to JAWS, that ain't
happening any time too soon I'm afraid. A bit of a financial setback due
to my recent experience.
I will close for now before I become grumpy <smile. But seriously, help
is desperately needed.
Larry
