If I'm not mistaken, F7 has been the hotkey for spellchecking in Word and even
WordPerfect 5.1, before menus and ribbons came to be. Those of us in our 40s
and older are more likely to recall the days before menus, when so many
functions in a word processor were done by hitting various function keys,
sometimes with shift or control. I recall my mom having a strip across the top
of her keyboard that showed a color-coded label for what each function key did
- F5 to save, F7 to spell check and so on.

Clarification question, I mainly write in my e-mail program Thunderbird.
And when I spell check,, I first press f-7. What is the derivation of that
hot key?
