Afternoon All, I was a WindowEyes user before We, when it' predecessor was VocalEyes. I miss WE and the team who created it and the super support staff. My keychain has a GW Micro fob on it and it always will. Though everyone has to make their own decisions about their screen reader, can I suggest that folks with concerns about Windows 10 or about the direction that many browsers are headed, do a bit of preventative self-care.
I have access to both JAWS and NVDA and switch back and forth to keep up my skills so I can teach both. NVDA and its community of users is remarkable. No, it is not just the same as WE, but things are close enough in the general use that transition is quite easy. The suggested support cost when you download is $30.00. however, that is not required to download and use the program for as long as you want. The documentation which is free on the development web site, will give you a good start. Don't assume that the synthesizer you hear when you first run NVDA is the only option. This is another good reason to read up before you start. The support comes largely from other users but developers monitor the list to help out with the tuff problems. True, there is no phone support but in the last six months I have not felt that loss. So if you install and practice now, when the day comes that WE no longer work, you will have a good fallback to keep you going. No, this note was not paid for by NVDA but check it out at: NVDA is developed by NV Access in collaboration with the community. However, it is really hard to draw conclusions from beta or insider builds since persons in those programs won't know if problems that might exists won't be solved before the final release. Window-Eyes users should either be somewhat familiar with Narrator or NVDA so that we are not without alternatives if Window-Eyes should stop working. We've already been told this about previous updates while in the beta phase and WE is still working fine. So who knows. We'll just have to wait and see.
