Audacity works great for such simple tasks. DBPoweramp also can remove silences in files as a DSP plugin. Of course, there's Sound Forge, which is up to version 12.5, but that costs $500 last time I checked. Ironically, the baby versions of Sound Forge, such as Studio, are much more accessible than Sound Forge Pro. There are progress bars and the plugin interfaces use standard controls. But there's no way to get the audio restoration plugins installed with the light versions.
