So far I have been able to open ExceL files using Win-Eyes 9.5.4, but often
have to "Unprotect" them. However, coming out of such files seems to be
problematic. I seem to land in a kind of frame from which I find it
difficult to escape.

I'm running Window-Eyes 9.5.4 within Windows 10 build 1803 with Excel from
Office 365 and have had no problems opening a single spreadsheet which I
edit over and over again to keep track of my expenses.
Therefore, my experience is only with a single spreadsheet, but, as I say,
I'm having no problems using Window-Eyes.
I wish I could think of some reason why you're having problems.

The problem is that it will not open. I tried to save it and same thing
happens. But if I have JAWS running it will open just fine.

That is not quite right.
It could open, but still be protected.
Is it fully editable with JFW?
You didn't give many details about your experience, and so all I can do is
guess.
