This happens to me, too, but more with Reply. Can't proofread my
messages as it goes somewherre else or doesn't speak. I'm replying to
your message but don't want to use backspace or even, once, arrow keys.
Updated a few days ago. If I want to reply I usually open a new message.

Is this the end for newer versions of the mailing program - just as well
as we have seen with the newest versions of the Firefox browser? If so,
is there any place to download the latest working version of
Thunderbird? Or, is it my computer that is all mixed up? Anyone else
seeing these behaviors?
I managed to write - and edit my postings - by help of NVDA. So
apparently, that screen reader keeps up with Mozilla's ever ongoing
eagerness of changing layout. Have not yet tried Jaws, so don't know if
any of the above will apply.
