While I deplore Vispero's strong arm bullying tactics to annihilate
the competition and make JAWS virtually the only game in town, JAWS's
hotkeys are far from awkward. Unlike Window-eyes, which has no
consistent modifier, the JAWS modifier is insert. If you use the
laptop layout, you can also use the caps-lock key as a modifier,
which effectively allows you a modifier for each hand.
Furthermore, every single JAWS hotkey is customizable; you can even
define multiple hotkeys for the same functions, especially if you use
both caps-lock and the extended insert as modifiers. I learned this
the hard way, thinking that all JAWS hotkeys could be executed with
either modifier. Turns out, you have to define a new hotkey or the
same function if you want to use another modifier.
All in all, there's nothing awkward or unwieldy about this keyboard
architecture.
