I have noticed a potential datasource from an article in the Economist about
distributed computing.

More details at

A project called [EMAIL PROTECTED] is planning to use volunteers to geocode
roads, rivers and other key features from UNOSAT mapping. Whether or not
OpenStreetMap would be able to use the resulting data or not I don't know, but
at least people on here who might like to help them are aware (not that I'm
trying to get people to leave OSM!).

Also, it is probably the case that people who sign up to an initiative like
this are interested in maps, and if takeups of other distributed computing
projects are anything to go by, it could be a great marketing opportunity for
OSM. Don't know if the project is up and running yet, I can't find any further
info.
